Today, I’m going to show my top 9 styling tips that will transform your guest bedroom into an incredibly cool space. I predict if you follow these tips, your friends will want to stay forever!
BOLD WALLS
As your guest room is often used less frequently than other rooms in your home, you can afford to have fun with your walls. Why not pick a patterned wallpaper or a bold paint colour? In my own spare room, I went for a ‘Great Wave’ from Cole and Son (you can see it here) which is a total showstopper!
If you’re little nervous of busy patterns – then just paper behind the bed in something like room above – which looks calm and collected with this peach geometric wallpaper from Galerie wallcoverings.
STYLE WITH MIRRORS
Your guests will appreciate a decent mirror to get ready in the morning. A full-length one is idea when propped up against a wall. It will cleverly make you space look bigger too. I wrote a whole post on that topic alone (if you want to take a look here).
The crisp white bedding above is beyond brilliant – from a selection at Harvey Norman.
UNIQUE DRESSING TABLE
I love the set up above where a trestle has been used as an alternative dressing table. Handy too – as when you guests have gone home, you can reclaim it as your home office desk. Invest in pretty stationary boxes to stash your paperwork in.
Fill your trestle with fake flowers – like these Jane Packer ones from Sainsburys Home.
MODERN DAY BED
A day bed is the ideal solution for space-starved rooms. Use it as a comfy seat to chill out on and then when pulled out it makes a generous, comfy bed.
This guest bed from Happy Beds caught my eye. The high sides and button back gives off hotel-chic vibes – and they are on to something with that handy drawer for stashing bedding, pillows and blankets.
EXTRA COMFY MATTRESS
This bed looks so inviting! It’s the layers of pretty bedding (you can find here) and then a super plumb mattress!
If you invest in a decent mattress and your guests will thank you for it. If you want to make your visitors feel cosy then treat them to a super-soft topper. Choose a mattress with a washable cover to give you the option to clean between visits. Happy Beds have lots of these types of mattresses.
KOOKY ACCESSORIES
I love an ornament. I have heaps of candle holders, mini statue, books and vases in my spare room. Style up your bedside with a little collection of your fav finds.
Don’t you just love this little set up above? A friend introduced me to Lola Design prints – think flower + animals + pasles. So many cute options – this polar bear is so me (and so my friends coming to stay will love it too).
ADD FRIENDLY PLANTS
Doesn’t this look the cutest? I love the little pot of trailing ivy on a stack of books. It will bring your bedroom to life. Pick a plant that could aid a good night’s sleep like Gardenia, Valerian or Lavender.
This shoe rack in the picture is pretty hand too – try Cox and Cox if you want to shop this look.
A RELAXING CHAIR
No guest room is complete without an armchair. I bet will love a seat to relax in when then are settling into your home. They also are fab for flinging clothes on, keeping clutter off the floor. Oh – and you can add a pop of colour with a cushion too. Look for one that makes a strong statement – anything from a retro find (like above) to modern Perspex one (as I have in my home).
This pretty guest room above is filled with accessories from Amara. The vintage lamp is a nice touch.
HANG UP COSY LAYERS
Ladder storage is a chic way to store your blankets, quilts and throws. Love the way the patterns in the blankets from Amara brighten up a corner of this room. Your guests will have something warm to snuggle under too if they get cold.
I like the fabric letters too!

If only I had a spare bedroom! Great styling ideas, Maxine, and thank you for introducing me to Galerie wallpapers – aren’t they stunning? Off for a browse and I think you’ve inspired me to start planning a change of decor in my OWN bedroom now 🙂 xx
Oh – that is great news. Make sure you share the results
Ah lovely post Maxine! Gorgeous ideas! A x
Thank you
So many gorgeous ideas! I wish we had a spare room but alas, all we’ve got is a blow up bed that gets stuck in the office. Maybe someday I’ll have a pretty spare room to dress up 😉 xxx
Maybe when you move! Thanks Kimberly.
I would love to stay in your guest bedroom! It looks so cosy! I think pull out beds are perfect for guest rooms too
You are welcome anytime 🙂
Lovely ideas here Ms Brady. And lovely images too xx
Thanks Karen
This makes me want to put my boys in the same room and transform one of their bedrooms in to a guest room. So many lovely ideas. I particularly like the day bed. It’s so nice.
I absolutely love that pink wallpaper! My guest room is awful! Seeing that sofa bed though, I reckon I could have another living room! And a great view over the Dee Estuary while I sit and enjoy a brew!
Lots of lovely ideas! I particularly like the idea of being a bit bolder with the wall decor in our spare room – it’s been on my mind for a while.
I love your idea that a guest room is a chance for a homeowner to be a little bit more stylish than normal; it’s so true! If anything, a guest bedroom shouldn’t be abandoned until half an hour before they arrive; it can be a canvas for you to test your design skills on, and hopefully will become an inspiration for what you can do with the rest of the house.
