8 budget home styling ideas – We Love Home in Marie Claire Magazine

Want to give your home some TLC but don’t have a big budget to play with? Marie Claire Magazine asked me to share my top tips for their readers. And in this post today, I’m giving your cool interior design tips that won’t break the bank.

What to you vamp up your home but your budget won’t let you?  I’m going to share my 8 top interior styling tricks so that your home can look beautiful on a budget – here’s my simple and affordable interior tips just for you.

1/ Personalise + Customise

When looking to update your home on a budget, up-cycling is your friend. Creating something unique to you will create a chic look. The purse-savvy home stylist has wasabi tape, sequins, lettering, stamps and glue on stand-by. I like these Gold letters, £5, Wedding In a Teacup
TIP: Pinterest is jam-packed full of amazing Ikea hacks that transform very ordinary off-the-shelf items into something totally bespoke.

2/ Mix something old with something new

Tempting as it is to find all your home furniture in thrift stores – I would suggest you don’t decorate the your whole home head-to-toe with junk shop bargains. Instead mix in brand new spanking buys (that have a vintage vibe instead). Supermarkets have a great selection of home buys which you can pick up with your weekly shop. Adding new pieces to your home will keep your home feeling fresh not fuddy-duddy.
TIP: It’s worth buying modern lighting rather than risking buying an old lamp that might need re-wiring. Lamp, £165, Rose and Grey

3/ Get To Know the Latest Paint Effects

Just one tin of emulsion can vamp up your room in a matter of hours. Be playful with paint using it in unusual ways – from Ombre effects, to painted murals, to painted ceilings to woodwork painted in a vibrant tones and patterns.  Look what they have done in the image above – such a beautiful idea especially when teamed with this Delphinium bed linen, from £20, BHS
TIP: Not sure where to start with these types of paint effects?  Make YouTube your first port of call with lots of Home style vloggers with how-to videos on these effects walls, bringing your home up in the style stakes.

4/ Look up + Light up

You’ll be amazed how much more luxe your home will look when you’ve treated your home to new light fittings. Pick a shade as big as your room allows to make a statement with lighting.
TIP: Cluster of paper lanterns costs next to nothing but can transform a room. These one cost £2 each from Sainsburys

5/ Hot metals are the budget shopper’s friend

Adding sparkle to your home elevates it from cheap to chic. Look out for furniture, cushions, lighting or bathroom accessories in chrome, coppers or golds – or even better grab a can of spray paint and do it yourself. I love adding a bit of sparkle to the bathroom with these accessories, from £20 each, Amara.
TIP: Look for home wares with a brushed or matt metallic finish for a more lux for less bucks.

6/ Go eclectic

The most stylish homes have had the pleasure of visiting have been artful ‘curated’ with collections of items. Rather than buying all your accessories and home furnishings from one place, pick up key pieces along the way. You could make an interesting display on a sideboard or on your shelf. It’s more fun to dress your home this way too. I love this range from the Linea collection, from £20, House of Fraser
TIP: Holidays or trips away are the perfect place to pick up something a little different for your home.

7/ Keep it fresh

The secret of a stylish home is that they constantly evolving and changing, so that they always appear fresh. You can do the same on a budget by move things around in your home, playing with the layout of your place. Guests will always be pleasantly surprised when they pop round and your pad has a new look (just by shifting the sofa)
TIP: Finish of your home’s look with an inexpensive bunch of seasonal flowers cleverly displayed in a grouping of vases. These vases above cosy just from £5 each from Oliver Bonus

8/ Banish Clutter

This one is self-explanatory. Clutter = Unpolished. The easiest and simplest way to overhaul your home is to de-clutter. Sash away unsightly paperwork, clothing and mess in stylish storage – a tidy home will feel priceless.
TIP: There is so much stylish storage out there, that it’s a shame to hide it away – make a display of it instead. Copenhagen storage items from £10, Sainsburys

Which is your favourite idea?

For me, I love using vases in my house. I have a huge collection of vases that I love to fill with garden flowers (another tip :-)) and that bed linen from BHS would love perfect in my almost-finished bedroom.
