AVOID Navy blue

While classic shades like blue will never fully disappear, the popularity of navy interiors is on the deline.

Navy walls reached their height of popularity in 2020 when people began working from home and began looking to redesign a home office. Navy is a great colour to create a Zoom backdrop that looks professional. Pantone even announced ‘Classic Blue’ as its colour of the year during this period.

Swap for olive Green

But while Navy exudes sophistication, it lacks warmth and homeliness. It can feel cold and uninviting. For a happy alternative, try a dark olive green instead which has a warmth behind it.

Pick an olive green with a grey-toned base to help balance the warm and cool tones while maintaining that same sense of sophistication that navy blue brings to interiors.

Avoid Bland grey

Just like navy, grey interiors filled out instagram feed year after year.

While grey was once celebrated for its timeless and versatile appeal, design trends have since evolved to more complex and intriguing colours. Nowadays, warmer tones and more natural variations are preferable to pale, cold and clinical grey.

I made the mistake of painting my whole home grey and hated it. Not only did it suck all the daylight out of my room, it made it feel gloomy and depressing.

SWAP FOR Neutrals

For a more modern neutral, look instead to neutral tones that feel warm and inviting. Take inspiration from the Japandi trend to expertly balance grey rooms with plenty of natural materials and warm furnishings.

AVOID red

According to Vogue, red is dominating fashion trends this autumn. And we can expect the red trend to filter into interiors for the new season too. It’s a strong look that I think will looked dated so so quickly.

If you love reds, then avoid a primary shade which can be too harsh for our homes, and instead opt for a paler, softer variation of red that can look very modern. Although this sign says everything you need to know about the colour red.

SWAP FOR EARTHY tones

Lean into earthier, brown-toned reds such as rust. Be sure to dull red’s boldness with muted clay undertones for a modern look.

Alternatively, go for darker shades with hints of purple such as eggplant or plum to make a room feel enclosed and cosy.

AVOID Barbie pink

Barbie pink was the hottest shade for the summer after the hit Movie but the heat has since died down.

While the trend was perfect for adding a feminine punch into interiors and even inspired a global shortage of pink paint, bright pink interiors certainly aren’t for everyone and aren’t always easy to live amongst. And they can look childish and not very sophisticated.

SWAP FOR Electric blue

If you’re coming down from the Barbiecore hype but want to maintain the same exciting tones, try electric blue instead. The colour is perfect for eclectic tastes, tying into this year’s red trend while still injecting the same boldness of Barbiecore.

You’ll see a lots of interior designers moving towards bold tones – so become ahead of the pack with your wall colour.

AVOID Typical teal

The once-trendy teal tones, which combined blue and green hues, have become somewhat overused and predictable.

Homeowners are now leaning towards fresh and innovative colour palettes to revitalise their spaces. Earthy tones like terracotta and olive green are gaining prominence, infusing warmth and a connection to nature.

SWAP FOR Lilac

If you want to replicate teal’s serene, cool atmosphere without such a bold punch, try instead soothing colours such as pale sage or muted lavender and lilac paint colours.
