1. Embrace Rich, Warm Winter Colours

Adding rich, earthy tones to your decor can instantly make your home more warm and cosy in the colder months. Adding a few cosy colours into your current room scheme will make your space feel warm and inviting. Look out for throws, cushions, and blankets in richer autumnal and wintery shades like deep browns, forest greens, burnt oranges and terracotta reds.

STYLE TIP: To balance out these darker hues, you can mix in lighter neutrals like cream or sandy beige for a well-rounded look. If you want more ideas what shades and tones colour schemes to choose, then make sure you check out my other blog posts.

2. Add Layers with Textures

My top tip that everyone needs to know is that layering different types of textures into a space in the winter months will add depth and warmth to any room. Learning how to layer textures is especially important in living rooms and bedrooms, where you want a sense of softness and comfort. Don’t be afraid to mix textures like wool, cotton and linen for a look that’s both cosy and visually interesting.

You’ll want to have thick knitted blankets, faux fur throws, and velvet cushions draped over your furniture. I tend to keep throws close to hand in a basket so I have one to cuddle under when I’m working at my laptop or when watching TV. Or at the end of my bed I’ll have a couple of throws to boost up the comfort factor at nighttime. It’s the same with my sofa…I love snuggle under my electric velvet throw when watching TV at night.

In winter, comfort is key. So with rooms with hardwood floors, invest in some cosy rugs to make the area feel softer and warmer underfoot. Try adding in a few more rugs in your living room or even kitchen, and in your bedroom you might want to invest in a thick, plush rug which you can layer on top of your existing carpet. I have a couple of smaller rugs that I bring out in winter time to make my living room home more warm and inviting.

3. Bring in Soft, Ambient Lighting

As the days get shorter, lighting becomes essential for creating a cosy atmosphere. Swap bright, overhead lights for softer, ambient options.

You’ll find that floor lamps, table lamps and wall lamps will all add to the cosy vibes in your home, especially when paired with warm-toned bulbs. And now you can get usb chargeable bulbs which means you don’t need an electrician to add more lighting to you home.

STYLE TIP: The simplest trick in the book is to use a string of battery powered fairy lights across your mantle or book shelf to add a subtle, magical glow without overwhelming your space.

4. Incorporate Winter Greenery

Houseplants aren’t just for the summer! Greenery can lift your winter decor by bringing a touch of nature indoors. Choose house plants that don’t need much light, like snake plants, ferns, or small potted evergreens. These plants not only add freshness but also create a connection to the outdoors during a season when you’re more likely to be indoors.

And when you go on a winter walk, you can pick up branches, ivy, holly or mistletoe to decorate your home. You can style an interesting mantle piece display or fill a vase with twigs to bring the natural world into your home.

5. Style the Fireplace (or Create One)

If you have a fireplace, make it a focal point for the winter season. Try styling it with candles, lanterns, or a garland for added warmth and charm. My fireplace isn’t working, so I pack it with candles to cheat the look of a real fire.

If you don’t have a fireplace, a grouping of candles on a coffee table or console can create a similar cosy effect. You want to create a focal point in your room that you can gather around when you settle in for the evening.

6. Add Natural Elements

Incorporating natural elements like wood, stone, and even dried flowers can bring an earthy feel to your decor. Wooden bowls, ceramic vases, and slate coasters are all subtle touches that add to a wintery aesthetic without overwhelming the room.

And you don’t have to buy anything new. Moving items around your home at the state of winter will make it feel like a new space. As the days get shorter, I dig out my fur throws, and I make sure to have a bowl of satsumas on my dining room table in a wooden bowl, and I layer up the blankets and cushions on my sofa. It’s about making small changes that bring a smile to your face.

7. Use Seasonal Scents

Winter decor isn’t just about what you see. It’s also about what you smell. Scents like cinnamon, pine, and cedar add a festive feel that enhances your winter decor. Try scented candles or essential oil diffusers to bring these aromas into your home.

STYLE TIP: Look out for scents that uplift your mood and bring a sense of calm.
