Recent research has revealed that Brits will pay an average of 5% less for a home featuring colours they don’t like. With the average property price in the UK now around £302,000, a poor choice of colours could be costing homeowners upwards of £15,000 when they come to sell. That’s a lot of money that you could be putting towards your next home.
What’s more, almost a fifth of Brits believe a bad colour scheme – either on the inside or outside of a property – knocks over 10% off the value of a home, meaning the cost of poor colour choices on the seller could be even greater.
Of course, the impact of paint colours on home value is largely subjective. As a disclaimer, I want to say that I’m a big fan of expressive colour – if you want to live with a bolder hue or a controversial colour pairing, then go for it. But, if you plan to sell, there are some instances where a coat of a more palatable paint colour might be in order, or when it might be best to avoid a daring colour trend.

1. Sunny Yellows
The research found that Brits consider yellow to be the cheapest-looking colour when incorporated into a property. This is a concern for sellers, given that 10% of homes in Britain currently feature a yellow colour scheme. And you really want to avoid paint colours that will devalue your home, like yellow.
Obviously, with paint it’s all about placement! For example. a yellow children’s room might not put off buyers, but a yellow kitchen might be a bit too much for some! Don’t eradicate this colour totally, but instead think abut where best to use it in your home.
STYLE TIP: Sunny yellows can look a little young. Why not instead choose richer yellows like mustard tones on a feature wall for a similar impact for a grown up look.

Pink will look more modern (and less tacky) when teamed with black accents

‘Peach Fuzz’ may be Pantone’s colour of the year, but heavy use of pink could risk devaluing a home. Research shows that pink tones are considered the ‘tackiest’ way to decorate a home. While that bright pink paint might be your favourite shade, it might not be for others.
STYLE TIP: If you love pinks, then why not go for a white with a hint of pink for a softer shade for your walls.

Playing it safe with beige could also impact a property’s price, with Brits dubbing a neutral palette the most ‘boring’. This is closely followed by grey, with the once-coveted colour fast losing favour amongst homeowners. In fact, Google searches for grey homes have dropped by over two-thirds since 2021!

4. Statement Oranges
Bright orange walls might look great with your decor style, but chances are it’s not to everyone’s taste, which could put off potential buyers. Bold and unconventional colours like orange may not appeal to a broad audience. Orange can also be a difficult colour for some buyers to look past when trying to imagine the way they would redesign the space.
STYLE TIP: Generally, avoid brighter colours in bedrooms, like oranges. Instead, opting for neutrals will create a calming, relaxing environment that will appeal to more buyers.

STYLE TIP: If you love that dark look, you can be clever with where you use these colours. Dark shades do make rooms look premium but ensure the room you choose isn’t one of the main family areas. Use dark colours in more intimate spaces like dining rooms, TV rooms, or bedrooms.

Although you do not want to erase your personality from your home, creating a blank canvas for them to imagine their style and furniture.
It’s fascinating to see the stereotypes attached to certain colour palettes, particularly shades like pinks and neutrals which are used in so many homes but appear to be falling out of favour. However, I do find it encouraging to see that homeowners are feeling more confident to use bold colours both inside and outside their properties, which will appeal to the style-conscious house buyers in 2024.
