It can be tricky to know how to choose the right rug size for your home. If you have ever bought a rug that looked completely wrong once it was in the room, you are in very good company. It is one of the most common decorating frustrations I hear about, and it almost always comes down to one thing: size.

Rugs are one of the biggest game changers in a room. Get the size right and the whole space suddenly feels anchored and pulled together. Get it wrong and even a beautiful rug can make a room feel awkward and unfinished.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RUG Size

Q: ‘I’ve bought and returned two rugs already because they just didn’t look right in my home. One felt like a postage stamp and the other completely swamped the space. How do I know what size rug to choose so it actually works with my layout and furniture rather than fighting against it?’ Amelie, Hawick

Size really does matter when it comes to rugs, and the most common mistake I see is going too small. A rug that floats in the middle of a room without connecting to any furniture will always feel like an afterthought, no matter how lovely the pattern. As a general rule of thumb, when in doubt, go bigger. Here is how to get it right in every room.

1. How to choose the right size rug for a living room

In a living room, the rug’s job is to anchor the seating area and pull everything together. At the very least, the front legs of your sofa and armchairs should sit on the rug. This connects the furniture to the rug and makes the whole seating area feel like one cohesive zone rather than a collection of pieces floating around the room.

If your room is large enough, having all four legs of every piece of furniture on the rug looks even better and feels wonderfully grounded. The key thing to avoid is a small rug sitting entirely in the middle of the room with no furniture touching it at all. That is the postage stamp effect, and it is the fastest way to make a room feel unfinished.

2. How to choose the right size rug for a dining room

In a dining room the rules are slightly different because you have chairs that move. Your rug needs to be large enough so that your dining chairs remain on the rug even when they are pulled out from the table. If the chair legs drop off the edge of the rug every time someone sits down or stands up, the rug will constantly shift and the room will never feel settled.

A good way to work this out is to measure your table, then add at least 60 centimetres on each side to allow for chair movement. When in doubt, size up.

3. How to choose the right size rug for a bedroom

In a bedroom the priority is softness underfoot, because that first step out of bed in the morning sets the tone for the whole day. Your rug should extend far enough beyond the sides and foot of the bed so that when you get up, your feet land on fabric rather than cold floor.

As a guide, aim for the rug to extend at least 50 to 60 centimetres beyond the sides and end of the bed. If you have a narrower room and a large rug feels too much, two runners placed either side of the bed can work just as beautifully and give you that same soft landing without overwhelming the space.

4. The masking tape trick that will save you from buying the wrong rug

My co-host Gemma Gear has the best tip for avoiding rug regret, and once you hear it you will never shop for a rug without doing this first.

Before you buy, use masking tape to map out the size of the rug on your floor. It sounds a bit tedious but seeing the actual footprint in real life makes all the difference. You will immediately know whether it feels right for the space, and it is a lot easier to peel up tape than it is to wrestle a three metre rug back into its packaging.

You can also do a lower-tech version of this with newspaper or an old sheet, anything that lets you visualise the size before you commit.

5. A few more rug sizing rules to keep in mind

Beyond room-specific advice, here are a few general rules that will help you choose the right size rug every time.

Leave a consistent border of bare floor around the edges of the rug, ideally between 30 and 45 centimetres on each side. This frames the rug properly and stops it looking like it is trying to be a fitted carpet.

In an open plan space, use rugs to define different zones. A rug under the sofa and coffee table creates a living area, a rug under the dining table creates a dining zone. The rugs do not need to match but they should feel considered and deliberate.

And finally, do not be afraid of a large rug. The most common rug mistake is going too small, so if you are wavering between two sizes, the bigger one is almost always the right call.

Final thoughts on choosing the right size rug

The right rug can completely transform how a room feels, making it warmer, more cohesive and more considered. The wrong size can undermine even the most beautifully decorated space. Take your measurements, use the masking tape trick, and when in doubt, always size up.
