7 Garden Trends We’re excited to see IN Summer 2024
As the summer season unfolds, these seven garden trends for 2024 will inspire you to get outside. Get ready to bloom this summer!
1. Regenerative gardening
As concern for the environment continues to grow, sustainable gardening practices are becoming increasingly popular. This summer, expect to see a focus on eco-friendly materials, rainwater harvesting systems, and drought-resistant plants. By incorporating these elements into your garden design, you’ll not only reduce your environmental footprint but also create a haven that’s in harmony with nature.
With an environmental crisis not going anywhere, there has been a move in 2024 towards a regenerative approach – starting from the soil upwards. Now, we’re looking at gardens as entire ecosystems supporting an array of different creatures and insects, and gardening as a less intrusive way to restore existing ecosystems.
2. Adding Limestone paths
Limestone tiles are taking the gardening world by storm, and for good reason. This natural, versatile material adds a touch of sophistication to any outdoor space, blending seamlessly with its surroundings.
Whether you’re creating a patio, walkway, or pool deck, limestone tiles offer a durable, low-maintenance solution that exudes elegance. Its’ subtle, earthy tones also provide a beautiful backdrop for statement plants and decorative accents.
3. Vibrant Colours
Gone are the days of monochromatic gardens! This summer, vibrant colours are taking centre stage, injecting a dose of fun and personality into our outdoor spaces.
From bold blooms like sunflowers and zinnias to brightly hued planters and garden decor, colour is being used to create a sense of energy and playfulness. Pack your boards with tons of colourful flowers and bulbs. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different hues to create a look that’s uniquely yours.
4. Wild lawns
In 2024 we’ll be looking to replacing our lawns with meadows that can be left to grow long until they are cut back in late summer or early autumn. You can complement these wild lawns with borders packed with bulbs and perennials to create more bio-diversity as lawns get smaller and smaller. Or just let your garden go wild, the bugs and bees will thank you for it!
5. Garden buildings
Garden buildings remain one of the most popular elements in garden design – and that will only increase in 2024. Especially as more of us are working from home or can’t afford to move so need to carve out extra space at home.
Outdoor kitchens, which have been popular for a while, but now they will feature sleek appliances, ample counter space, and clever storage solutions. Whether you’re entertaining friends or enjoying a family dinner, an outdoor kitchen provides the perfect setting for al fresco dining.
And if you really want to stand out from the crowd, outdoor bathrooms are now on trend for 2024. From cold showers, ice baths, hot tubs and private bathing experiences – it’s easy to turn a corner of your garden into the ultimate bathing experience. Just don’t forget to screen it off with planting for privacy.
With all your garden buildings makes make sure to include natural elements like stone, reclaimed wood, and living walls in your design. By adding organic elements into your garden building, you’ll blur the lines between nature and architecture.
6. DIY natural swimming ponds
If you are lucky enough to have more space, larger ponds or lakes are soaring in popularity in 2024. The demand for traditional swimming pools is declining in favour for natural swimming ponds. And the best bit? You can DIY a low-impact, low-cost swimming pond that you can share with nature.
And if a swimming pond feels a bit too much, then even the smallest garden can host a miniature pond which will still attract a different gamut of insects, birds and mammals into your garden.
7. Edible gardens
Growing your own food is still popular as we all try to reduce their carbon footprint (and save money!) People still grow vegetables in the traditional way in raised beds but more and more of us are using the popular no-dig method which saves time and produces great yields.
But what 2024 brings to your self-sufficient gardening, is filling your boarders with edible flowers that can be used to garish salads or fish dishes.
Common edible flowers you can try to grow are:
- Cornflower – A sweet-to-spicy clove-like flavour.
- Dahlia – Flavours range from water chestnut and spicy apple to carrot.
- Hibiscus – Great addition to fruit salads or to make a citrus-flavoured tea.
- Honeysuckle – Enjoy the nectar fresh, or use petals make a syrup, pudding, or a tea.
- Magnolia – The young flowers can be pickled or used fresh in salads.
- Nasturtium – Tasting peppery, like watercress, these make a lovely salad addition.
- Pansy – Mild and fresh-tasting, they’re great in a green salad or as a garnish.
- Rose – Lovely in drinks, fruit dishes, jams, and jellies thanks to its delicate fragrance.
- Scented Geraniums– The flavours range from citrussy to a hint of nutmeg.
- Cape Jasmine – Extremely fragrant, they’re ideal for pickling, preserving, and baking.
